SEVENTEEN

MILLIE

Millie pushed the sleep mask up onto her forehead and frowned at the soft blue light coming from Abby’s bed.

“Girl, you’re supposed to be sleeping.” Millie pulled the covers off and swung her legs over the edge.

Abby was lying on her side, holding her phone over the pages of a journal Millie had given her—or rather, loaned to her.

That journal hadn’t been out of her hands since she opened the first pages on the train yesterday.

The worn, leather-bound journal had seen better days. The spine was creased, the pages bent, the edges frayed. The leather was smooth and cracked in places, obviously well loved.

As hard as it had been to share it with her, Millie had no regrets. The moment Abby saw her mother’s handwriting, she knew. She knew she’d made the right decision to share it with her.

“I know, I know.” Abby coughed, then quickly covered her mouth. “My throat is dry, that’s all.”

“Drink your water, then.” Millie handed her a bottle of water that she’d placed on the table between the two beds before shuffling across the room and into the bathroom.

When she emerged, Abby was sitting up, the bottle of water half-gone and the journal closed.

“Throat better?” The last thing she needed was Abby getting sick. Josh would never forgive her.

It’d been bad enough when he called and blamed her for not convincing Abby to get in touch with him.

He’d quizzed her for a solid five minutes about how Abby was feeling: was she tired, cold, coughing, sleeping well, eating enough?

“Do you find the room dry at all? Maybe we could open a window a little?”

Millie checked the thermostat and readjusted the temperature. “I don’t think opening the window is a good idea. There could be a draft and that dry throat could turn into something worse.” Millie frowned as she looked her granddaughter over.

“I really think you should get some sleep. We’ve got a busy day tomorrow.”

“Millie, it is tomorrow.” Abby gave her a sleepy smile.

Millie glanced at the clock and groaned. “I swear we just went to bed, didn’t we?”

“Hey, I wasn’t the one up all night, talking on the phone. I’m pretty sure I fell asleep before you did.”

True. Abby didn’t even get on her computer to write her post about the long train ride. She had a shower and then climbed beneath the covers and was lights out, while Millie talked to David.

She missed him. She’d told him about sharing the journal with Abby, and he asked if she was okay with that, knowing how hard it must have been for her. Not once did he tell her to stop being so selfish over something so trivial as this journal. And she loved him for that.

“What’s the plan for today? Please tell me we’re doing lots of walking.” Abby got up and stretched.

Oh, to have the body of the young that didn’t crack and creak every time you moved, that didn’t ache depending on the weather, and that did everything you asked without hesitation .
